Retrieval practice ideas for A Level chemistry

The hardest thing about A Level chemistry isn’t any single topic - it’s the sheer surface area. Two years of content, all of it examinable at the end, much of it interdependent. A student can “know” Born–Haber cycles in November of Year 12 and be unable to start one by the following June, and the synoptic papers are ruthless about exactly this.
The fix is boringly well-evidenced: regular, spaced, low-stakes retrieval. The challenge is doing it every lesson for two years without it eating your planning time or going stale. Here are nine routines that survive real timetables - most need zero preparation once the habit is set.
1. The 15-question starter
Fifteen short-answer questions on the board as students walk in, five minutes, self-marked. The crucial design decision is the spread: five questions from last lesson, five from earlier in the current topic, five from anywhere in the course. That last five is what makes it retrieval rather than a recap. 2. Last lesson / last topic / last term
A three-column grid: one question from yesterday, one from the previous topic, one from a term ago. Quicker than a full starter and useful on practical days when time is tight. Over a fortnight the “last term” column quietly walks through the whole Year 12 course.
3. Mechanism speed-draws
“Nucleophilic substitution of bromoethane with hydroxide. Blank paper. Three minutes.” Curly arrows are a motor skill as much as a conceptual one, and they decay fast. One timed mechanism a week keeps the whole organic toolkit warm, and marking is instant - the arrow either starts at the lone pair or it doesn’t.
4. Precise-definition ping-pong
Some A Level marks are pure recall of exact wording: standard enthalpy of formation, Kc, oxidising agent, rate-determining step. Put the term on the board; students write the definition word-for-word; compare against the mark-scheme version and count the missing qualifiers (“standard states”, “per mole”, “at constant temperature”). Students are consistently shocked by the gap between what they meant and what they wrote - which is the point.
5. Blank-page organic maps
Give students one compound - ethene, say - in the middle of a blank page and ten minutes to map every reaction they can reach from it: reagents, conditions, products, onward reactions. Then they compare with a partner and steal what they missed. This is the single best diagnostic for synoptic organic questions, because multi-step synthesis is precisely a walk across this map.
6. Colours and observations quiz
The pure-recall corners of inorganic chemistry - flame colours, precipitate colours, transition-metal complexes, test-tube observations - are ideal retrieval material because answers are one word and marking is instant. Ten colours, two minutes, weekly. These marks are the cheapest on Paper 1 and students still drop them every year.
7. Half-equation sprints
Electrochemistry stays fragile for most students because half-equations are practised in one block and then abandoned. A two-minute sprint - “acidified manganate(VII) to Mn2+, go” - once a week does more than a revision lesson in March. Extend to combining half-equations when the basics are automatic.
8. The brain dump, upgraded
“Write everything you know about equilibria” produces warm feelings and little learning. Upgrade it: after five minutes of dumping, hand out the answer pack or mark scheme for a related question set and have students annotate their dump - ticks for what they retrieved, a different colour for what they missed. The comparison step is where the learning happens.
9. Spaced homework quizzes
Homework is the easiest place to smuggle in spacing, because you control the question mix. A weekly quiz of ten questions - half current topic, half drawn from a rota of earlier ones - beats a long worksheet on this week’s content. Making it a routine rather than an event
Three rules keep retrieval alive past October half-term:
- Same slot, every lesson. First five minutes, while you take the register. If it needs a decision, it will eventually lose to marking.
- Low stakes, always. Self-marked, no grades recorded. The moment scores go in a spreadsheet, students start protecting their answers instead of testing their memory.
- Everything is eventually fair game. If starters only ever cover last lesson, students learn to cram in the corridor. The “anywhere in the course” questions are the ones doing the long-term work.
The planning cost is the usual objection, and it’s fair - nine routines are only “low-prep” once the question banks exist.
